Joint Conservation Project GEM-JICA

In collaboration with Japan International Cooperation Agency(JICA), the Conservation Centre at the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM-CC) held the joint conservation project (GEM-JC), in which more than 40 Japanese and 60 Egyptian experts have participated. The focus of the project has been the transportation, investigation and analysis and conservation of 72 artefacts selected for display at the GEM.

The artefacts were divided into three groups according to their materials: wood, textiles and mural paintings. The wooden artefacts comprised three funerary couches and five chariots belonging to the treasures of King Tutankhamun. The textile group comprised 57 textile items, also belonging to the Golden King. The mural paintings group included six panels of wall reliefs extracted from the Mastaba of Ini-Sneferu-Ishetef.

The project was launched on 16th December, 2016 by the first meeting of the Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) between the Egyptian and Japanese parties. The project lasted for approximately 5 years and ended in March 2022.
