Description

This finely executed travertine (Egyptian alabaster) sphinx was discovered in the Karnak Cache (CK 363). It shows a human-headed sphinx, wearing the traditional pleated nemes royal head dress, fronted by a protective uraeus snake. The royal cartouche carved between the paws of the sphinx gives the name of King Thutmose III. The head of the uraeus, the tip of the nose and the right foreleg of the sphinx are broken.
