Description

A golden mask and mummy trappings from the wooden coffin and mummy of Hekaemsaf who served as a ‘Chief of Royal Boats’ under King Amasis in Dynasty 26. His intact burial was found at Saqqara and the mummy was covered with a golden mask and richly embroidered cloth wrappings. The mask is made of a repoussé gold plate; the eyes are of feldspar, the pupils of obsidian, the eyelids and eyebrows of lapis lazuli. Hekaemsaf’s hairstyle frames his face and hangs on either side of his beard. A collar of eight rows of beads ending in golden falcons heads covers his chest. Below the collar is a kneeling figure of the sky goddess Nut extending her winged arms. An inscribed golden band runs down from below the kneeling goddess and on each side of the band are the Four Sons of Horus in repoussé gold.
