Description
Mesehti was a provincial governor of Asyut in Upper Egypt in Dynasty 11. His tomb, discovered in 1893 in Asyut, is famous for its wooden models. This carefully modelled wooden headrest was among the objects discovered. It has a curved top with a square abacus above a short shaft and a base. Ancient Egyptian headrests were used in daily life to support the head while sleeping. They also had a funerary function as explained in the Book of the Dead, to raise and support the deceased head in resurrection just as the sun rises above the eastern horizon each morning.
