Description
Canopic chests held the embalmed internal organs of the deceased in ancient Egypt. This travertine canopic chest was concealed in a niche cut in the west wall of the burial chamber of Queen Hetepheres I whose tomb was discovered in 1925 on the Giza Plateau. Hetepheres I was wife of King Sneferu and mother of King Khufu of Dynasty 4. Her canopic chest has four compartment that after five thousand years of her burial still contained the remains of her embalmed internal organs, possibly the liver, lungs, stomach and intestines.
