Description

A standing theophoros statue of a man named Wesirwer who served as the ‘Chief of Prophets of god Montu at Thebes’ probably about Dynasty 30. The statue originally stood in the great temple of Amun-Re at Karnak. The statue's head was acquired by the Brooklyn Museum on the New York art market in 1955. The headless statue was discovered much earlier in 1903 in the Karnak Cache and was later on taken to the Cairo Museum. It was De Meulenaere who realised that the head in Brooklyn belonged to the torso of Wesirwer in Cairo. De Meulenaere solved the rebus-writing of the name ‘Wesirwer’ carved at the top of the back pillar on the Brooklyn head, which consists of the bird glyph (wer) carved within the throne of the seated Osiris (Wesir). He came to the conclusion that the head probably belonged to a man by that name. Later on, when the back pillar inscription of the Cairo torso was published for the first time, he immediately decided that they belonged together and his conclusion was indeed confirmed by a comparison of the stone and measurements of the break at the neck. The statue shows Wesirwer wearing a costume that was introduced to Egypt upon the Persian conquest in the sixth century BC. It consists of a round-necked undergarment, a V-necked over-garment and a wrap-around knotted at his chest. He carries a group statuette of the Theban triad consisting of Amun, Mut and Khonsu between his hands. The text on his statue reads a formula cursing all priests who would fail to pray for him, along with an offering formula in his favour. It appears from the texts that the statue owner held a number of important titles such as the ‘Scribe of the Chancellery of the Southern District’ and the ‘Clerk of the Land Records of the Southern District’.
