Description
A travertine (Egyptian alabaster) statuette from the tomb of Mesehti, a provincial governor of Asyut in Dynasty 11. It shows Mesehti seated on a low-back chair, resting his arms on his knees. Asyut was a prominent commercial centre in the Middle Kingdom where huge rock cut tombs of the town governors were built. Mesehti’s tomb was discovered in 1893 and is most famous for its funerary equipment that included, in addition to this statuette, wooden models and two large wooden coffins.
