Description

This cylinder seal was discovered in 1936 under the Temple of Montu at Tod among other artefacts that became known as the ‘Tod Treasure’. The seal is carved out of lapis lazuli and is decorated with repeated quadrupeds of Mesopotamian style. With the nearest source for lapis lazuli being in Afghanistan, the extensive use of this gemstone in many of the artefacts in the Treasure of Tod is a clear evidence of Egypt's trade with the ancient Near East.
