Description

The ‘Dendera Treasure Hoards’ were caches discovered at Dendera in the area between the temple proper and its enclosure wall. They included spectacular silver, gold and bronze objects of great art-historical value. Among the discovered object were statues of divinities, ritual instruments, jewellery and mirrors. This silver statue was part of a votive ritual hoard discovered in 1918 near the sacred lake of the temple. The heavily oxidised statue shows the child god Ihy who personified joy and music in ancient Egypt. Ihy is nude, his body slightly tilted forward and his arms hanging down beside his body. He wears a skull cap and a heart-amulet hangs on his chest. His well-fed belly symbolises his ability to bring prosperity and abundance. The statue is almost identical with GEM 2559 (also from the same Dendera Treasure Hoard).
