Description
Funerary masks were used in ancient Egypt to protect the head of the deceased and to ensure that their features were perfectly portrayed. This cartonnage mummy mask belongs to Mesehti who served as a provincial governor of Asyut during the later stages of Dynasty 11. His tomb was discovered in 1893 at Asyut in Upper Egypt. This coloured cartonnage mask shows him with an oval face, large outlined eyes, a moustache and a thick painted black beard. He wears a hair wig with a lotus fillet (headband) tied around the crown of the head and a multi-coloured broad collar adorns his chest.
