Description

Ancient Egyptian headrests were believed to magically protect the sleeper at night. In the Book of the Dead, the funerary function of headrests is to support the head of the deceased during resurrection, just as the sun rises above the eastern horizon each morning. This headrest was discovered among the collection of Queen Hetepheres I, the wife of King Sneferu and mother of King Khufu, both of whom ruled in Dynasty 4. Her tomb (G7000X) was discovered in 1925 on the Giza Plateau. The queen is believed to have been first buried at Dahshur near her husband's pyramid. For reasons unknown, her funerary equipment including her sarcophagus were reburied at Giza, near her son's pyramid. This headrest, among other objects in her tomb, reflect the luxurious life of a royal person during Dynasty 4.
