Description
A limestone group statue discovered at Saqqara. It belongs to Shepsi who served as an elder of the court in Dynasty 5. Shepsi is seated on a chair, looking straight ahead, his right hand closed in a fist on his right thigh, while his left hand rests palm down on the left thigh. He wears a short hair wig, a broad collar and a short kilt. His wife Nikau stands next to him. She served as a high priestess of goddess Hathor. Nikau wears a short hair wig and a close fitting dress. She embraces her husband with her right arm, while her left arm hangs down by her side. In conformity with ancient Egyptian art traditions, Nikau is smaller in scale than her husband and although Shepsi is seated, their faces are at the same level. At the front of Shepsi’s chair, his son Shepsipoudjed stands with his finger to his mouth. The hieroglyphic text on the plinth states their names and titles.
