Description

A set of two wooden coffins were found in the tomb of Mesehti in Asyut. Mesehti was a nomarch of Asyut and an overseer of priests of Wepwawet and Anubis. This exterior coffin of Mesehti bears inscriptions that are partly derived from the Pyramid Texts. The two inlaid wedjat eyes possibly allowed him to communicate with the living. For an individual, to rest inside a double coffin was exceptional. Therefore, the presence of this exterior coffin reflects the prestige of Mesehti as an important official in the Middle Kingdom.
