Description

Made of wood covered in layers of gold foil, Tutankhamun’s canopic shrine protected his mummified internal organs. Like the large shrines that surrounded the sarcophagus and the coffins, the canopic shrine protected the canopic chest and the miniature coffins inside. An open canopy topped by a frieze of protective cobras inlaid with red, blue and green glass sits on a sledge. Under this is a wooden shrine decorated with scenes of gods on each side and another frieze of colourful cobras. Four gracious figures of the goddesses Isis, Nephthys, Selket and Neith guard the shrine with outstretched protective arms.
